On Sunday, King Charles III attended a church service near Balmoral estate in Scotland to honor the memory of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on the second anniversary of her passing.
Now 75 years old, King Charles has been spending the summer in the Scottish Highlands with his wife, Camilla. It was in this peaceful region that Queen Elizabeth passed away at the age of 96 on September 8, 2022.
The couple was seen arriving for the service at Crathie Kirk, a small granite church that has long been associated with the royal family, especially when they reside at Balmoral Castle. The church holds historical significance, as Charles’ great-great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, laid its foundation stone, and it was a regular place of worship for Queen Elizabeth during her stays at Balmoral.
King Charles assumed the role of monarch immediately after his mother’s death, taking over the throne after her extraordinary 70 year reign, which coincided with her Platinum Jubilee.
This past year has been challenging for the royal family, as both King Charles and his daughter-in-law, Kate, the Princess of Wales, have faced health issues, revealing they were both diagnosed with undisclosed forms of cancer earlier this year.
Despite these challenges, King Charles has gradually resumed his royal duties, engaging in a variety of public appearances and events. Just a day before the remembrance service, the King and Camilla attended the Braemar Gathering Highland Games. Dressed in a traditional tartan kilt, King Charles appeared in high spirits, enjoying the event filled with Scottish cultural activities such as bagpiping, Highland dancing, and tug-of-war.
